Sugarplums, Candy Canes and Nog…oh my!

Here we are again – Thanksgiving next week here in the U.S., swiftly followed by Christmas, Chanukah and New Years – all celebrations which are inextricably linked with food!!  I already feel as if I have gained a few pounds just thinking about it.

This is, without doubt,  one of the most difficult times of year if you are on a weight loss plan.  The holidays revolve around parties and family gatherings and meals which include foods that are high in fat and calories and low in nutrition.  But I will share some tips to help you stick to your weight loss plan and keep those sugarplums dancing in your head rather than attaching to your thighs.

First and foremost, don’t stress out over it all to the point that you don’t enjoy these special times.  Each year and each season brings events that can never be repeated, creating memories to last a lifetime.  If you overdo a bit in the process, it is not the end of the world.  Just remember to get right back on track and don’t continue making the wrong choices just because you did once.  Once or twice won’t matter that much, but turning into an eating machine will.

Second, avoid the alcohol. Cocktails and beer are usually served at holiday parties, and they can be full of calories. And remember your will power – when you drink, it can easily disappear, leading you to eat and drink even more.   Having one drink at a party or special gathering may be fine, but don’t overdo it every time you head out to celebrate the season.

Another great tip to help you stick to your plan during the holiday season that works for parties or  large group celebrations is to show up fashionably late after you’ve already eaten a meal. By doing this, you won’t feel pressured and end up eating an entire meal of holiday goodies, Santa sugar cookies, hot chocolate or eggnog.  Of course, don’t be rude to your host by showing up late at smaller parties or for special dinner parties.

The holidays offer some perfect opportunities to get outside as well.  Put up outside decorations, go play in the snow and have a snowball fight, or take a walk through your neighborhood and admire all the Christmas lights.  If you are in an area where the weather is mild, you can find plenty of outdoor activities that will get your heart pumping and burn tons of calories. Work off those candy canes!

If the weather is too cold or snowy, head to the mall…and don’t worry about getting a close parking space…park at the far end of the lot.  While you are gift shopping, make a number of laps around the mall and take the stairs instead of the escalator.  Walk briskly past the food court!

And finally, don’t even open those gifts of food.  You can’t tell people what to buy for you, but why not share the love?  Express your joy and gratitude, then take these products in to work (not if a co-worker was the giver!), present them as a gift to a neighbor, or donate the unopened items to your local food bank.

These tips can help keep you staying slim, even as you’re surrounded by goodies.  So have a joyous holiday season…and Merry Christmas!
